Macrame Cord Types: Single Strand, 3 Ply and Braided Compared
Published
Short answer
Macrame cord comes in three constructions. Single strand is the softest and combs out into straight fringe. 3 ply is three twisted strands: firmer and stronger, with defined knots and wavy fringe. Braided cord ties crisp knots and does not comb out at all. Cotton is the standard fiber for all three. Jute and hemp are rougher, and synthetics are for jewelry and outdoor pieces.
A spool tells you three things: thickness, how the cord is built and what it is made of. Construction decides how the knots look and whether the ends can become fringe. Fiber decides the feel, whether the piece can live outdoors, and whether the cord takes dye or a heat sealed end. Sellers use several names for the same construction, so the first table lists those too. Thickness is a separate choice and has its own page, the macrame cord size chart.
Macrame cord braided vs twisted vs single strand
Single strand and 3 ply are both twisted cords. The difference is one bundle of fibers against three. Braided cord is not twisted at all, which is why it behaves differently at the ends.
| Feature | Single strand | 3 ply (twisted) | Braided |
|---|---|---|---|
| Also sold as | single twist, macrame string | 3 strand, twisted cord, twisted rope | braided cord, braided rope |
| How it is built | one bundle of fibers, lightly twisted | three twisted strands twisted together the opposite way | fibers interlocked in a braid, sometimes around a core |
| Feel | softest, slightly fuzzy | firm, like rope | smooth and firm, no fuzz |
| Knot definition | soft, smooth knots | firm, well defined knots | crisp knots with sharp edges |
| Fringe | combs out soft and straight | unravels into three plies, combs out wavy | does not comb out |
| Strength and stretch | the least firm of the three | firmer and stronger than single strand | firm, with less stretch than twisted cord |
| Best projects | wall hangings, feathers, keychain tassels | plant hangers, bags, pieces that carry weight | bags, accessories, geometric patterns, crochet |
Choose single strand when
Single strand is the cord for pieces where fringe is part of the design. It is soft on the hands and forgiving for a first project.
- The piece ends in fringe, a tassel or a feather. Single strand combs out soft and straight with no extra steps.
- You want soft, rounded knots and a matte, cottony surface on a wall hanging.
- You are learning and expect to untie knots. The cord is soft, but it fuzzes if it is undone many times.
- The piece will not be pulled or handled much. The ends untwist as you work, so tape them or tie an overhand knot.
Choose 3 ply when
3 ply is the classic twisted macrame rope. The three strands give each knot a clear outline and make the cord firmer and stronger than single strand, so it suits pieces that hang and hold something.
- You are making a plant hanger or a bag: a piece that carries weight and should keep its shape.
- You want knots that read clearly from across the room, with the twist of the rope visible in each one.
- You like wavy, textured fringe. Each end unravels into three plies that comb out wavy. Steam straightens it.
Note.Wavy fringe from 3 ply cord is normal, not a fault. See how to comb and straighten fringe for the steam and trim steps.
What is braided macrame cord, and when to choose it
Braided cord is made of fibers interlocked in a braid, sometimes around a filling or core. It is smooth, round and firm, does not untwist while you work and has less stretch than twisted cord. The price of that neat surface is the ends: braided cord does not comb out into fringe.
- Choose it for bags, accessories and geometric patterns where sharp knot edges matter more than softness.
- Choose it for crochet. A hook slides over the smooth braid and does not split it the way it can split plies.
- Choose synthetic braided cord for outdoor work. Lawn chairs use 6 mm braided polypropylene.
- Skip it for any design that ends in combed fringe, feathers or leaves.
What is macrame cord made of?
Most macrame cord is cotton, often recycled cotton. Cotton is soft, holds a knot well and fringes well. It also absorbs moisture and can mildew, so it is an indoor fiber. Polypropylene and polyester resist water and mildew, which makes them the choice in the outdoor cord guide.
Fiber also decides two finishing jobs. Synthetic ends can be heat sealed and cotton ends cannot. All-purpose dye is made for cotton and nylon, while cord with more than 35 percent polyester needs a dye made for synthetics.
| Fiber | Feel and look | Fringe and ends | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton | soft, matte; the standard | fringes; cannot be heat sealed | almost every indoor project |
| Jute | rough, stiff, rustic brown | coarse fringe | rustic plant hangers and wall pieces |
| Hemp | rough, stiff, golden tan | coarse fringe | rustic pieces; thin hemp for jewelry |
| Polyester | smooth; thin sizes are often waxed | no fringe; ends can be heat sealed | jewelry, outdoor pieces |
| Nylon | smooth knotting cord | no fringe; ends can be heat sealed | bracelets and other jewelry |
| Polypropylene | light, smooth, usually braided | no fringe; ends can be heat sealed | outdoor pieces, lawn chairs |
Which macrame cord to buy: three short rules
Pick the construction first, then the thickness. The guides for 3 mm, 4 mm and 5 mm cord list spools by size.
- Buy single strand cotton if the piece is about fringe: wall hangings, feathers, keychain tassels. 3 mm is the usual starting size.
- Buy 3 ply cotton if the piece hangs and holds something: plant hangers, bags, shelves. 4 mm is the all-round size.
- Buy braided cord if you want crisp knots and no fringe, or plan to crochet. Go synthetic if it lives outside.
Quick answers
The short version of each question on this page. Construction names vary by seller, so check the listing photos as well as the name.
- Is macrame cord cotton? Usually yes. Cotton is the standard fiber. Jute, hemp, polyester, nylon and polypropylene cords are sold for rustic, jewelry and outdoor work.
- What is braided macrame cord? Cord with fibers interlocked in a braid, sometimes around a core. It ties crisp knots and does not comb out into fringe.
- Macrame cord braided vs twisted: which is better? Twisted cord, single strand or 3 ply, for fringe and a soft look. Braided for crisp knots, bags and crochet.
- Which macrame cord to buy first? Cotton in 3 or 4 mm. Single strand if you want combed fringe, 3 ply if you are making a plant hanger.
- What are the macrame rope types? Rope, string and cord are the same product. The three types are single strand, 3 ply and braided.
